Putin’s Victory Day speech

by admin   ·  May 10, 2022   ·

In his 11-minute speech at the Victory Day military parade in Moscow’s Red Square to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia, Putin said the decision to launch the operation against Ukraine on February 24 was the only correct choice, Russia offered a preemptive rebuff to the aggression – this was a forced, timely, and the sole correct decision, one taken by a president.

In his Victory Day speech on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated “calmly but firmly” that Russia needed to take preventative measures in its special operations in Ukraine because NATO had created a “absolutely unacceptable threat” at Russia’s borders. According to Chinese analysts, Putin’s speech was delivered in a “restrained” manner to send a clear signal to the West that Russia will not accept increased pressure to squeeze Russia’s strategic space, while also demonstrating Putin’s willingness to negotiate.

The Russian President stated that NATO countries had refused to listen to Russia while planning an attack on Crimea, and that NATO had systematically created a “absolutely unacceptable threat” to his country, specifically on its borders.

According to Chinese analysts, contrary to how the West “demonised” Putin by speculating that he would formally declare “war” on Ukraine or use the occasion to announce major targets, Putin did not mention Ukraine directly, nor did he give any indication that the conflict would spill over into other countries, nor did he use harsh rhetoric to incite confrontational sentiments among the public and military in his speech.

According to Wang, the West aimed to completely weaken Russia by prolonging the Russia-Ukraine conflict and attempting to kick Russia out of the UN and international order so that the West could establish a new set of rules while ignoring current international rules.

However, Putin did not criticise NATO or the US harshly in order to “maintain decency” for both sides and leave room for future negotiations, according to Cui.

The military parade in Moscow’s Red Square to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany featured 11,000 military personnel and 131 pieces of military and special hardware. The airborne section of the military parade was cancelled due to inclement weather, according to TASS.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Russia, the great victory 77 years ago is of special significance to both China and Russia, as well as to the entire history of mankind. China will work with Russia and other countries to resolutely uphold the achievements of WWII victory and international fairness and justice, practise true multilateralism, and achieve global peace, stability, and sustainable development.

During a press conference on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian stated that one of the important lessons learned from the World Anti-Fascist War was that countries should respect one another, seek common ground while putting differences aside.
China has reiterated its position on defusing tensions and promoting peaceful negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

During a virtual meeting on Monday between Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Xi stated that the Ukraine crisis has once again brought European security to a crossroads, and China encouraged Europe to play an active role in promoting peace talks and building a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security framework.

Xi stated that all efforts must be made to avoid the escalation and expansion of the Ukraine conflict, and China welcomes any efforts that promote peace talks.

During his speech, Putin also stated that soldiers fighting in eastern Ukraine’s Donbass region are fighting for their motherland and its future.

According to Putin, some of the soldiers in the parade had recently returned from the frontlines.

He predicted that, as in 1941, the Russian soldiers marching in Monday’s parade would soon join the frontlines of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In recent days, fighting has escalated in the Donbass region. According to the Associated Press, Russian troops shelled a seaside steel mill in the port city of Mariupol on Monday after civilians evacuated the plant.

Russia had wanted to take Donbass as soon as possible and even sign a peace agreement, Yang said, noting that the battle for eastern Ukraine had reached a stalemate in recent days, especially as massive military support from the West continued to arrive in Ukraine.

Russia’s V-Day parade took place amid mounting Western pressure.

One day before the parade, the US imposed new sanctions on Russia, focusing on its services and defence industry. On Sunday, US First Lady Jill Biden visited Uzhhorod and met with Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska.

After meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kiev on Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced weapons and equipment aid for Ukraine, and the G7 nations pledged to phase out or outright ban Russian oil and gas.
