Plant-based protein can be good for food security

According to Temasek’s Steve Howard, livestock provides about 18 percent of calories, but farm animals occupy 80 percent of agricultural land. In some markets, livestock consume up to 80% of grain.

If consumption patterns change, those resources can be diverted away from livestock farming.

According to the chief sustainability officer of Singapore’s state investor, the shift toward plant-based proteins may benefit food security.

According to Howard, extreme heat waves are affecting food production in India, and grain reserves will only be able to sustain the world for 73 days, or “a couple of months of food security for the entire world.”

He stated that people with lower incomes are especially vulnerable to rising food prices.

Separately, despite recession fears, Howard stated that money will still be invested in green technology.

He cited electric vehicles, alternative protein, and solar energy as examples of new technologies that are performing well and becoming more affordable as strong tailwinds.

According to Howard, businesses and governments have increased their commitment to sustainability and climate goals.

He claims that solar energy is expanding at a “extraordinary rate,” and that the same could happen with energy storage and other renewable sources.

Meanwhile, the policy environment is strong and there’s customer demand for green alternatives, he said.

“If you go three, four years ago, most of the capital markets were asleep at the wheel on climate, not really doing things meaningfully. Now, capital markets are queuing up,” he said.

“The tailwinds are turning into a hurricane,” he said.
