Compounding calculator

How a balance changes when the same percentage is applied again and again, with or without regular additions.

Compounding calculator: Your figures

A negative rate shows a balance shrinking

A period can be a trade, a week or a month — up to 600

This shows the arithmetic of compounding, not an expected trading return. Real returns vary from period to period and are often negative.

How it is calculated

Each period the balance grows, or shrinks, by the rate, and any contribution is then added. The next period’s rate applies to that new balance — which is what separates compounding from earning the same amount every period.

closing balance = opening balance × (1 + rate ÷ 100) + contribution

This illustrates arithmetic, not an expected trading return. Real returns vary from period to period and are often negative, and losses compound just as gains do: after a 50% loss, it takes a 100% gain to get back to where you started.

Worked example

  1. 1,000 at 10% per period: 1,000 × 1.10 = 1,100 after the first period.
  2. 1,100 × 1.10 = 1,210 after the second.
  3. Adding 100 at the end of each period instead gives 1,200, then 1,420.
